Approaching the north-eastern corner of the ice-covered mountainous Elephant Island, off the coast of the Antarctic peninsula in the outer eastern reaches of the South Shetland Islands, in screaming gale-force winds. Its name was given by early explorers sighting elephant seals on its shores.
