At the southern end of the Temple of Heaven stands the circular, tri-level Yuan Qiutan, or Circular Mound Altar. Built during the Ming Dynasty in 1530, it was used for ceremonies to pray for rain by the emperor in times of drought, and animal sacrifice to ensure good harvests.
