The southern cluster of older buildings within the city's palace is nicknamed "the Bastille", due to its tower. Following Germany's defeat in WWI, Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach abdicated here in 1918, leading to the declaration of Germany's "Weimar Republic" in Weimar's German National Theatre. |
