| Standing over the Parc du Champs du Mars is the landmark symbol of Paris itself: the 324m-tall Eiffel Tower, named after its chief engineer Gustave Eiffel. Built for the 1889 World Fair, it was nearly torn down 20 years later for scrap until the military realised the range of radio towers installed at the top.
