| In the centre of the city off Jalan Maliaboro stands Fort Vredeburg, a former Dutch colonial fortress, dating from 1760 and rebuilt after an 1867 earthquake. Occupied briefly by the Japanese in WWII, the military complex was converted into an Independence Struggle Museum, opening in 1992. |
