| A Buddhist monk rides down the main street through Vang Vieng, first settled around 1353 (called Mouang Song at the time) as a staging post between Luang Prabang and the capital Vientiane, being roughly halfway between both. The town was renamed Vang Vieng during French colonial rule in the 1890s. |
