| Warsaw's Stare Miasto was originally surrounded by an earthen rampart, replaced in the 16th century by brick defensive walls on stone foundations: the Barbican formed as both a defensive tower and a semi-circular gate. This is a reconstruction from the original 16th century form, done in 1954.
