A few blocks west of the Kremlin on the northern banks of the river Moskva stands the tallest Orthodox church in the world: the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Started under tsar Alexander I in 1812, it was dynamited by the Soviets in 1931, but rebuilt in 6 years and re-opened in 2000.
