A crocodile basks on the surface of Lake St. Lucia. It was originally named Santa Lucia by the Portuguese in 1575, on the feast-day of Saint Lucia of Syracuse. Besides crocodiles, St. Lucia Lake harbours hippopotami, fish, and various birds.
