| Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by the Earl of Pembroke to control a fording-point of the river Nore and the junction of several roads, and was a symbol of Norman occupation of Ireland; three stone towers still remain. The rebuild into the first stone castle on the site was completed in 1213.
