On the western side of Dam Square in the heart of Amsterdam stands the Royal Palace, built in the 1660s originally as the City Hall, until its conversion to a royal residence in 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars. It is still used by the Dutch royal family (who are usually based in The Hague) from time to time.
