Next to the Royal Palace on Dam Square's north-west corner is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), built in 1408 as the Oude Kerk (Old Church, over in Amsterdam's Red Light District) had grown too small for the city's population. Today it is used mostly as a gallery and exhibition space.
