The monastery was founded in the 4th century by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, at the site of a sacred spring in a cave. Its modern name comes from the spear of Longinus - the Roman weapon reputed to have wounded Jesus at his crucifixion - allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude.
