| The neo-classical Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie/Koninklijke Muntschouwburg, Brussels' opera house, this incarnation dates from 1818, replacing the original built in 1700 which itself replaced the city mint; the name stuck. It played a prominent role in the formation of Belgium: a riot here after a performance of La Muette de Portici in 1830 sparked the revolution against the Dutch. |
