| On the south-west of Brussels' Grand Place/Grote Markt stands its landmark Gothic Hôtel de Ville/Stadhuis, dating from 1420, with a 95m-tall belfry completed in 1454; legend states the architect jumped to his death from it as the building was not constructed symmetrically. It barely survived the 1695 French bombardment (ironic, as it was the principal target of artillery fire). |
