One of the city's most recognised buildings is the neo-classical Lutheran Helsinki Cathedral, on the wide Senaatintori (Senate Square). It was built between 1830-52 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, tsar Nicholas I of Russia, before the country's independence from Russia in 1917.
