Along the north of Rautatientori is Finland's National Theatre, founded in 1872, with the current Jugendstil building constructed in 1902. A statue of Aleksis Kivi (1834-72), the national author who wrote "Seven Brothers", the first significant novel in the Finnish language, stands in front of it.
