| Built in the 14th century on the northern edge of the Île de la Cité (the main island within the river Seine) and named for the residence of the concierge of the Palais de la Cité, it was a prison during the Revolution: even Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned here before facing the guillotine in October 1793.
