| Perched at the very top of the Butte de Montmartre, its basilica was funded by donations from Parisien Catholics after the humiliating defeat of emperor Napoleon III by a newly-united Imperial Germany in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1. It is faced by the gentle gardens of the Square Willette. |
