| The striking five-storey Kan'ei-ji Pagoda, built in 1639 as a bodaiji (funeral temple) for Tokugawa shoguns; six are buried here. Ueno Park was originally part of the grounds of the Kan'ei-ji Temple, erected to protect Edo Castle. During the Boshin War (1868-9), the temple was destroyed; the pagoda somehow survived.
