| Standing over the medina's walls eastern walls is Tangier's Great Mosque. Originally placed on the site of an old Roman temple, it was replaced by a Portuguese church, before being transformed into a mosque by sultan (or Moulay) Ismail Ibn Sharif in 1684. |
