| Next to Wawel's cathedral is the castle building proper, having served as a royal residence and where the country's rulers governed Poland for five centuries from 1038 until 1596, when the capital moved to Warsaw. It has survived wars, plunder, and occupation from Austria after Poland's last Partition in 1795.
