| Facing Praça 8 de Maio, the Church of the Holy Cross boasts a flamboyant 18th century arch. Founded in 1131 outside Coimbra's original walls, it is the burial place of Portugal's first modern king Afonso Henriques (r. 1139-85), rebuilt in the 16th century by king Manuel I. |
