| Just on the edge of the upper reaches of Alfama under Castelo de São Jorge is Largo das Portas do Sol (Sungate Square); a route 28 tram trundles down into Baixa westwards. It was named after the old Sun Gate to the Alfama in the city walls (or "Moorish fence") that existed here until it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. |
