| This otherwise-unassuming doorway on Avenida Manuel Maria Portela is from a portal belonging to a 14th century leprosy hospital that once stood here. The original door lintel remains with the following Latin inscription from the Old Testament: vanitas, vanitatum et omnia vanitas ("vanity of vanities, all is vanity"), reflecting the attitude towards death by plagues in medieval times. |
