| The landmark Statue of Liberty, on Liberty Island in the west of New York Harbour, seen from a Staten Island ferry. The neoclassical copper statue - a figure of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty - was a gift from France, dedicated in October 1886. It has since become an icon of freedom and of the country, seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea. |
