| Standing over the Altstadt is the historic Heidelberg Castle complex, dating from 1294 and one of Germany's finest examples of a Renaissance-era fortress, witness to many bad fortunes. This is the Pulverturm ("Powder tower"), destroyed by French forces in 1693. |
