| Leipzig has a long tradition in opera dating over 300 years: the city's original Opera House on Augustusplatz was destroyed during WWII by Allied air raids in 1943. This Socialist-influenced reconstruction (with emblems from Communist-era East Germany) was opened in 1960. |
