| To the east of Mickiewicz Square stands the neo-Romanesque Imperial Castle (actually a palace!), built between 1905-10 for German kaiser Wilhelm II (when the city - known as Posen - was part of the German Empire) intended to reflect German control over western Poland, acquired after its partition in 1793. |
