In southern Chiado, Lisbon's neo-classical Town Hall bore the proclaimation of the new Republic of Portugal in 1910 from its balconies, ending over 8 centuries of rule by Portuguese monarchs since the independence of Portugal from the Kingdom of León (in today's Spain) in 1139.
