The Topkapı Palace in the heart of İstanbul was home to the sultans of the Ottoman Empire from the 1470s until the 19th century. This is the Bâb-üs Selâm (Middle Gate), separating the palace's First and Second Courts, and the city's people from those who had imperial business.
