| Dominating the centre of the basilica on the high altar is the reputed tomb of Saint Peter himself. Directly under the central dome, the baroque wooden frames rise 19 metres high, and only the Pope himself is allowed to serve at the high altar. Tradition holds that Saint Peter's own tomb is below the baldachin. |
