| Washington Place on South Beretania Street, Honolulu, was constructed by an American merchant sea captain in 1845; queen Lili'uokalani married his son in 1862 and made it her private residence; she became monarch in January 1891. She was arrested here during the overthrow of the kingdom in January 1893, and it later became the official residence of the governor of Hawaii. |
