| A statue of queen Lili'uokalani (r. 1891-3), last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii (before its overthrow), on the grounds of the Hawaii State Capitol. After an unsuccessful uprising to restore the monarchy in January 1895, the oligarchical government placed the former queen under house arrest at the Iolani Palace; she died as a private citizen at Washington Place in 1917. |
