| The site where the fortress sits started as a Stone Age settlement, rebuilt in the 7th century and fortified in 1026. Amberd was invaded in the 1070s by Seljuk Turks, taken back by a Georgian-Armenian army in 1197, and eventually destroyed by Mongol raiders in 1236. |
