| The Berlin Wall was erected by the East German government in August 1961 to enclose West Berlin (along with guard towers), "protecting" communist East German citizens from capitalist ideas and influence. Seen as a physical manifestation of the Cold War's "Iron Curtain", it was eventually pulled down in 1989, preceding German reunification a year later in 1990. |
