| Okaukuejo is the southern administrative centre for Etosha National Park, originally founded as a German military outpost in 1897 in an effort to control the spread of foot-and-mouth disease; it was converted into a tourist camp in 1955. The tower, built in 1963, was modelled on the old fort. |
