| Al-Marjeh Square in the heart of modern Damascus, marked by the Telegraph monument (left of picture), is also known as Sahat ash-Shuhada (Martyrs' Square), referring to the victims of Ottoman (1916) and French (1925-6) suppressions of nationalist anti-government uprisings. Egyptian-born Israeli spy Eli Cohen was publicly hanged here in May 1965. |
