| Perched on a hilltop some distance west of the Palmyra ruins in the deserts of central Syria stands Palmyra Castle, dating back to the 13th century (built by the Mamluks, probably on the ruins of a former fortification). It's surrounded by a dry moat, and only accessible by a footbridge. |
