| First erected by the Romans, the Old City walls are pierced by a number of gates: only one of which, the restored Sharqi Gate (Eastern Gate), dates from Roman times, and known then as the Gate of the Sun; the minaret was added to the gate in the 12th century. The Via Recta stretches west back into the Old City from the other side. |
