| Looking across the central courtyard to the central keep's tower, which housed the commanding officer's quarters (usually the Grand Master of the Hospitalers), along the southern fortified wall. Legends say the castle never fell, taken only by deceit by Mamluk sultan Beybars in 1271, using a forged letter to the commander to surrender the castle. |
