| Puffins prefer cliffs to establish nests: as sea birds, they spend most of their lives on the water and return to land only to breed, usually to the same colony year after year, excavating burrows on grassy clifftops. One egg is laid, incubation lasts 5-7 weeks, and both parents care for their young. Chicks are fully fledged at 6-8 weeks, when it leaves the nest not to return for 5 years. |
