| The puffin's striking appearance, large colourful bill and waddling gait have given rise to nicknames like "clown of the sea" or "sea parrot"; as a sea bird, it is more adept at moving on - and under - the water than on land, able to dive up to 150m deep to feed. Its unique bill becomes brighter in colour in spring: by the end of the breeding season, these are lost in a partial moult. |
