| At the western end of the city's National Mall stands the neo-classical Lincoln Memorial, built to honour the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated in 1868. Built in the form of a classical temple, it opened in 1922, and has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in August 1963. |
