| North of Valletta's walls across Marsamxett Harbour lies Manoel Island, named after the Knights Hospitaller Portuguese Grand Master under whose leadership in 1726 built Fort Manoel (centre of picture). Fortified in WWII, it was used as a base for the British Royal Navy, and is currently under restoration.
