Looking east along the Swakopmund Mole, an artificial breakwater constructed by the Germans to form a harbour basin to better off-load ships (as there was no available natural harbour nearby), taking 4 years and opening in 1903. It nearly immediately silted up, and a year later ships could only enter at high tide.
