Walking north along the High Line, built by the New York Central Railroad between 1929-34 as an elevated spur running along the western side of Manhattan; due to a decline in rail traffic it was abandoned in the 1980s with southern sections eventually demolished. It was repurposed into a rail-trail and public park along the former rail viaduct and opened in 2009.
