| The Brooklyn Bridge, seen from Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan, as it spans the East River and links the boroughs of Manhattan (on Manhattan Island, left of picture) to Brooklyn (on Long Island, right). Opened in May 1883, the suspension bridge was the first fixed crossing of the river, and over the years has become an icon of New York City. The Manhattan Bridge is visible behind it. |
