| In the centre of the city's National Mall stands the Washington Monument, an obelisk built to commemorate George Washington, a Founding Father of the United States, and its first President from 1789-97. Completed in October 1884, the 169m-tall marble and granite monument has an observation deck at the top with four pairs of windows in each cardinal direction. |
