| Near the southern end of Lake Shkodra in Albania's north lies the Rozafa Fortress, founded by the Illyrians, captured by the Romans in 167BC, and rebuilt by the Venetians and Ottomans. Legends state the name derives from a woman who was walled into the ramparts to help protect it when originally built. |
